Lovely Preformed Garden Ponds - a Simple Way to Improve Your Garden's Decor

Anyone wishing to attract wildlife to their garden or who would like to make their garden decor more attractive without having to spend a lot of time and effort, should think about adding preformed garden ponds to their garden.

Even if you don't have a lot of money to spend you can find many inexpensive kits. These kits will allow you to easily relocate your garden pond should you have to for some reason. A composite material is used to make these preformed garden ponds as well as the pond liner.

You want to start out by digging a hole where you would like to place your pond. Set the pond liner into the hole. You will need a pump to circulate the water, so consider locating the pond close to your house to reduce the amount of wiring that you will need.

Whenever you have water close to an electrical device you run the risk of getting a shock. To help eliminate this use a ground fault interrupter, or GFI, in the circuitry of the pump.

You need to inspect your property for low areas to keep rainwater runoff from getting into your pond. The last thing you want to do is put your pond in a part of your garden which is lower than the rest. If you put your pond in a low lying spot, lawn chemicals, such as fertilizers, can be washed into your garden pond and contaminate it.

Try to avoid this whenever possible. If you plan out the location of your pond ahead of time, it can keep you from having to move it later on. Depending on where your plants are located in your garden, you may need to relocate some of them away from your pond. If you have large trees or if there are tree roots growing in the location of your pond you will probably have to move your pond somewhere else. If you don't want to put your pond somewhere else, you will have to cut the tree roots and then put something in place to prevent them from growing back. It is best to not cut the tree down because it will create some nice shade for your pond.

When you are ready to install the pond liner, just place it on the ground in the location where your pond will be. Get some wooden stakes and hammer them vertically into the ground around the outside of the liner. Take some string or rope and wrap it around the base of the stakes to form an outline of the liner.

When you've done that, take the pond liner and move it to side so it will be out of the way and start digging the hole for your pond. Make sure to keep the sides of the hole vertical. Now take your liner and place it in the hole.

Find a straight piece of wood and place it across the liner then, using a carpenter's level, check the level of the pond liner. Then turn the wood 90 degrees and check the level in the other direction.

Put sand into the hole under the liner and the sides of the liner and make sure you pack it in nice and tight. This will support the pond liner in the hole. When you are done packing the sand in, re-check the level of the pond in both directions to make sure it is still level.

Now that that's done you can decorate your pond. An easy way to enhance the attractiveness of preformed garden ponds is by placing some clean pebbles into the bottom of the pond. One layer is all you need. Adding some solar powered lights will make it look nice at night without driving up your electric bill. If you want to give if a more organic look consider placing some stones or plants around it.

Inspirational Helpful Hints for Garden Pond Filters

Many people that are installing a garden pond often wonder if they really do need to install garden pond filters and what will happen if they don't.

There are some cases if you have a very small pond with no fish and very few plants, that you may be able to get away without having a pond filter. These are however not overly expensive items, and are well worth the investment based on all the benefits they provide to even the small simple pond.

Understanding how garden pond filters work and their purpose, gives a clearer picture as to why making a decision to add one to your pond is the right one.

Most people are not satisfied with just a simple empty pond and end up adding aquatic plants and most often fish to it. This is when it is a necessity to have a garden pond filtering system. The pond will be exposed to the fish waste, food they don't eat, and debris that land in the pond from the atmosphere. Over time these begin to rot and contaminate the pond. Simply put, your filtration system is your garden pond sewage system.

There are a variety of filtering systems that have their own way of fulfilling the necessary requirements. These can be biological filtering systems, or mechanical, and the best being the combination of both,

These filtering systems possess a filter that the pond water passes through. As it does, the good bacteria that is in the pond breaks down the harmful materials. There are times where the larger particles become trapped in the filter, and this is the reason why filters must be manually cleaned during the pond maintenance regime.

Two common types of garden pond filtration:

Gravity operated
The water is returned to the pond after going through the filtering system by gravity. This means the filter must be higher than the pump to achieve this. These types of systems are not expensive.

Pressure operated
The water is returned by means of force or pressure therefore they can don't have to be higher than the pump. Many individuals are beginning to favor this type of pond filtration system because it easy to maintain, and it has backwashing capabilities making it easy to clean.

Aside from these there are many other types of garden pond filters but they all work on the same premise. It may be a little overwhelming trying to determine which is best suited for your pond. Taking into account the number and type of fish you have housed in your pond for example, will help you decide on how complex of a pond filter system you require. In addition to this, you will also have to consider pond clarifiers or sterilizers to help keep your algae in control.

With the proper pond filtration system combined with the other garden pond supply requirements you should have many hours of enjoyment of a clean healthy pond.

Of course, growing a wide array of such herbs, native of their own climates and soil compositions is not going to be easy. Each herb is used to its own ecosystem and creating herb garden designs in one-size-fits-all is not very easy. So how to layout a herb garden?

Herb Garden Design Plans

The Preliminaries
Firstly, you have to decide which herbs you want in your garden. Herbs are plenty and will vary with your needs. For example, if you have a particular chronic health problem, it will make sense to grow a herb that will help alleviate the illness. Similarly, it is no good growing parsley if you are not going to use it in any of your dishes! So first decide on the use and utility of each herb that you're planning to grow. Also consider your local climatic conditions. Herbs are pretty delicate plants so plant them only if you think that the necessary weather conditions are suitable for them.

Herb Garden Designs
You can choose one or a combination of the below given herb garden design plans based on the herbs you are planning to plant. Each of these types has its own advantages and disadvantages. So try to maximize the advantages based on the herbs you use:

Container Planting
Simply put, container plantings are herb garden design plans where you are growing herbs in pots. The easiest way to do this is to club together all the herbs that need similar soils and sun exposure. Conversely, you could also pot each herb into individual small pots. I prefer the latter idea as it avoids the possibility of overcrowding. Most folks make the mistake of planting herbs too close to each other. This will create a competition between the herbs for space and the weaker ones will get a beating. So while making your herb garden design plans, make sure that the plants are well spaced out.
