Elegant Greenhouse Gardening in the Fall

As the days get shorter and weather becomes cooler, gardeners are aware that their summer pastime will soon be coming to an end. For gardeners with tropical or exotic plants outdoors that they don't want to lose to an early fall frost, transporting plants into a greenhouse is a good alternative. Greenhouses come in a variety of sizes and styles to accommodate almost any gardener's needs. In this article, we'll explore a few of the common types of greenhouse that might work for you.

Portable or temporary use greenhouse structures work well for the homeowner who is not ready to commit to a permanent structure. Most temporary use greenhouses are designed with a polyethylene vinyl cover that fits over a steel or aluminum frame. Depending on the size and shape of the structure, it will probably be necessary to do some kind of staking or anchoring to the ground so that it doesn't blow away; however, if you don't set the stakes in cement, you should be able to easily pull them up and move the greenhouse to another location or pack it away in storage, as needed.

Greenhouse gardening in the fall brings special challenges, because you are preparing for the oncoming cold weather of winter. In climates that see a lot of snow and cold temperatures in the winter, a portable greenhouse won't cut it for overwintering plants. If you're looking for a way to keep your plants alive all winter long, you'll probably have to invest in a permanent structure. There are many types of hobby greenhouse kits available through mail order catalogs and specialty online stores. If you will be overwintering plants in the structure, be sure to consider an appropriate heat source. A basic structure with polycarbonate panels will not stay warm enough in temperatures below 30 degrees to keep tropical plants alive all winter, unless you provide some type of heat source.

Indoor greenhouses are another good option, particularly for gardeners who won't have a lot of outdoor space. Indoor greenhouses can be freestanding shelf units that stand in the corner of a room or small tabletop units that occupy a shelf or workbench. The primary difference between indoor and outdoor greenhouses is that with an indoor unit, you will need to provide some type of artificial light for your plants. Before choosing the type of light, first evaluate the temperature in the room. Is it warm enough for your plants? If the temperature is below 75 degrees, you should probably consider buying a fixture that will supply both light and heat. Take extra precautions with heat lamps. You never want to set a heat lamp too close to anything flammable, including the cover on your indoor greenhouse. If you don't need supplemental heat, the best option is to buy a fluorescent light fixture and then select full spectrum fluorescent bulbs for it.

As you can see, fall greenhouse gardening can take on many forms, depending on the type of greenhouse you select. The greenhouse that is right for you will depend on a number of factors, including how long you want to keep tending your plants and how much space you have to dedicate to a greenhouse. No matter what your choice, greenhouses are a great option in the fall for gardeners who want to extend their hobby and maintain their plants through the winter months.

Beautiful Michelle Obama and Gardening

This past week I was amazed to see in the Dallas newspaper that Michelle Obama is going to plant a vegetable garden and some herbs. Two thumbs up for her. I was also thrilled to see on TV that the fifth grade class was able to get involved in the planting of this garden. I only now hope that they will continue to oversee the watering, weeding and growth of the garden. This is great for Michelle and stress relief with her busy schedule. For a child it’s educational. There is nothing like watching plants or seeds that you planted grow. (It is more fun for the children while waiting for that first vegetable to grow , they see a small vegetable and then you keep telling them it’s not ready to pick yet.) They are so excited that when the vegetable is ready to pick that they will actually eat the vegetables.

I brought my children up with small vegetable gardens and mostly grown in pots. You will get the same reaction whether the vegetables are in a pot or the ground. I am also so excited that she is bringing up her girls to eat healthy. These days it is so important for the health and well being of our children. Obesity is rampant and there are individuals such as myself that want to change things.

Just imagine if everyone started to grow at least one vegetable in a pot or in a small portion in their yard and then shared vegetables with their neighbors. Or even better yet get schools involved (some are already doing this) taking a small portion of the school yard and planting small gardens and each class taking a turn once a week to weed and water. When the vegetables are grown, because the children have had hands on, they are more apt to at least try if not enjoy what they grew.

Just remember all of you gardeners out there or those who want to start planting don’t forget to stretch afterwards. Gardening is actually working your muscles and that is a good form of exercise, so if you do not stretch afterwards there is a good chance that you will wake up sore and tender the next morning. We all have good intensions but muscles do tighten when they are put to work and they do need to be re -elongated to avoid soreness.

Luxury Gardening for Victory

"When I was a teenager, my father always had a garden," Herman said. "There was no cheaper better way to feed the family. Those were tough times. Our garden for many of those years in the was a 'Victory Garden.' "It was the government's way of encouraging everyone to save for the war effort. It worked. Even in those days, seed was the cheapest way to go. We would always have a garden." I knew what he was talking about because I'd recently visited the old WurliTzer building nearby on Niagara Falls Boulevard and seen an enlarged photo of the promenade, in front of the old music factory, filled with World War II Victory Gardens.

The photo intrigued me enough to do some additional research. Men like Herman came from hard scrabble backgrounds. That meant making due with what you had. He brewed his own dandelion wine. He saved seeds from year-to-year. He raised chickens in a coup behind his home, "grandfathered in" years after his city had passed an ordinance banning such endeavors. The basics of Herman's garden, however, were simple.

"Treat your soil right. You can add organic matter all you want, but no fresh chicken crap – it'll burn your plants. Commercial fertilizer costs too much. "You can grow from seed right in the garden. You won't know the difference." He also explained the importance of reading the notes on seed packages and keeping things watered. "I like heirloom tomatoes best because if you find one you really like, you can save the seeds," he told me. He cautioned about the most common mistake novice gardeners make.

"Don't over plant. If the package says tomatoes need to be 24 inches apart, don't plant them 12 inches apart. Plant some seeds in the ground too early. Some years, you will get an early crop. Other years, a late frost will kill everything or they won't germinate, but seed is cheap. "Pay attentions to crops that like cold – you can stretch the season with late planted broccoli, spinach, lettuce, peas and radishes."

Every time I talked to the man, I seemed to learn some more about what I didn't know. The bottom line, though, is to find a mentor like Herman (or Mike the Gardener) and follow his or her lead. About the Author

Luxury Organic Rose Gardening

In recent times, organic rose gardening has become the in thing between enthusiasts, and why not considering that man has been growing roses for thousands of years without the help of any chemicals. The truth is; you can have a magnificent rose garden without having to depend on any chemicals whatsoever. In fact, apart from being safer for your children and pets, an organic garden will also help to increase the longevity of your roses.

Let's face it; the earth has been here for millions and millions of years, together with the plants and wildlife and so far they've managed just fine without human help. Of course, once us humans start believing that we are able to do a better job than nature itself, that's essentially when things start going wrong. Under normal conditions plants will absorb the necessary nutrients and water through their roots, while the leaves undergo a process known as photosynthesis in order to convert sunlight and water into energy. All soil contains an abundance of organisms which help to break down dead materials and this in turn enriches the soil. When we go ahead and add chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, we simply course havoc with the natural chain of events within the soil. When all the helpful bacteria are killed off, harmful bacteria and fungi are then able to harm the plants. Furthermore, as strange as it may sound, plants can in fact become addicted to certain chemical fertilizers which mean that the more you give them, the more they'll require.

Contrary to what you may have heard, growing your roses organically is easy and also inexpensive. Even though you will no longer be purchasing chemical fertilizers and pesticides, you'll still be able to provide the soil with suitable food for your roses, and the best way to do that is by working compost into the soil of a new garden. Alternatively, for existing gardens you can simply add compost as a top dressing or as mulch. Remember, any gardener can have a compost pile by using all your old plant clippings, grass clippings, kitchens scraps, and even animal waste. In fact, there are now a number of different ways for you to start your own compost pile, whether you choose to use a dedicated container or whether you prefer a simple pile. Either way however, you will need to stir the pile from time to time in order to ensure that it is decomposing as it should be.

Apart from being able to steer clear of chemical fertilizers, organic gardening also means you'll no longer require as many types of pest control as you may have done in the past. Of course this certainly doesn't mean that you need to be in a helpless position with regards to pests because nature has already provided us with numerous forms of press control. These include certain insects which eat other insects, and birds which eat grubs. Snakes, lizards, and frogs all play a vital role in helping to prevent pest problems but if you feel that you really need a pesticide, then you can go ahead and purchase a natural pesticide. Not only are the natural organic pesticides highly effective, but they are also considerably less toxic than the chemical ones.

As most rose gardeners will agree with, the main goal is to grow large blooms which are wonderfully scented, and also to grow the most spectacular looking roses. You can be rest assured that this is well within your reach should you choose to grow your roses organically rather than with the use of chemicals.

For some people who do not gardening they just can not understand the joy of it all. But, there is truly something wonderful about gardening. It is just great to feel the heat of the sun on you and to feel your hands in the cool damp grass and dirt. And to see such beauty sprout up from all of your hard work is truly something to be proud of. I like to see all of my hard work start to sprout in the spring time. The spring time is what I value the most, it is before all the flowers start to bloom fully but, you can start to see things starting to form. The connection with nature that is made during the gardening experience can almost be compared with that of raising a child.

There are also some bad things that can come from gardening one of these things is different bacteria and even the income of parasites. It is unfortunate but, our favorite time of year to garden is also the period when parasites are most common. If you do not protect yourself enough than you can become a host to a parasite. So what you want to do is where protective gloves at all times. Also make sure to where shoes of some sort and not sandals. I know this one can be a little bit uncomfortable so if you want to take off your shoes while gardening I recommend putting something down over top of the dirt so you can lay on it without fear of catching a parasite. I like to use duvet covers for this because duvet covers are thick enough that you can rest easy from parasites but thin enough so you can still feel the cool ground. Also make sure to where some sort of eye protection because you do not want any dirt flying in your eyes, and if you can do this than you will able to garden in safety.

Theme gardening gifts utilizing plantings could likewise be lots of fun.  A herb could accompany an attached card including a recipe using that herb.  A plant which creates nectar and can appeal to butterflies could be matched with a book about butterflies

The simplest gardening gift for any gardener is a gift voucher to a nursery or shop where gardening tools and plantings are accessible.  This way, your friend could acquire whatever tool they don't own in their collection, or any kinda plants.

New Some Simple Gardening Tips

Everybody wants a beautiful, luscious, green garden to enjoy at home. Gardens are very relaxing, often inspiring and of course a great place to spend time with friends and family. However many of us lack even the most basic gardening skills and some people have no idea where to start in growing a beautiful garden.

Hopefully this article will give you a few tips and pointers in order to get going and growing!

Firstly it is important to take one step at a time. Gardens can take years to look established and full, so don't worry about beginning on a small scale or in a small section of your garden. With time, preparation, work and the right plants your garden will begin to take shape over time.

Secondly it may be a good idea to draw a basic plan of what you want your garden to look like. Think about the shape of your lawn and the shape of your borders. Do you want a seating area? Perhaps a screened off vegetable patch. These are all important things to consider so take your time and plan carefully.

Don't forget to check what type of soil you have in your garden. Some soils are more acidic than others, some have a high clay content and all of this plays an important role in what plans will be suited for your property. Simple soil testing kits can be purchased from good garden centres and once you are armed with the information, you can head back to a garden centre and seek advice as to what plants will be good for your particular type of soil.

Finally do some careful research into the plants, shrubs and trees you wish to plant. Consider colours, size, shape and even consider what time of year the plants will flower. If you plan carefully, your garden can change from one colour to the next, every month, giving you beautiful and vivid colours throughout the entire year.

Awesome a Vegetable Gardening Basic

Whether you want to grow a vegetable garden for the cost savings or the health benefits, gardening can be very rewarding. The easiest type of garden bed to start with is a raised bed. It can be made of many different things. My personal favorite are railroad beams. They are a nice height, very workable, and look nice too, but you can make your raised bed out of other things as well as long as they can hold the dirt.

After you've chosen your desired building material, you must decide how large your bed will be. Things to keep in mind include how much time will you have to take care of it, are you going to can it or share with friends, and how many varieties you want in your garden. If you are low on gardening time or new to vegetable gardening, start with a small bed.

After you've decided the size of your vegetable garden, you have to decide where to place it. Plants need up to eight or nine hours of sunlight everyday, so a Northern or Southern exposure is best. Another key element in plant growth is water. Since it doesn't rain everyday, you will have to find a way to get your vegetable garden water. Unless you love carrying buckets of water around, it is best to build your garden within reach of a water hose.

Once you have your materials, size, and location down, all that's left is soil and plants. Soil is extremely important. You must make sure that the soil you use to fill your raised bed is good top soil. Getting plant food and mixing it in will go a long way towards having a productive garden too. As far as plants go, do a plot plan before you plant. Decide what plants will go where based on the directions on the back of the packaging. Doing a plot plan with this information will make sure that you maximize your vegetable garden's potential and minimize headaches during the process.

New Do You Need Gardening Advice

Garden advice isn't that tough to come by.  As a matter of fact, you can acquire gardening advice from other nurserymen, in a horticulture catalogue, gardening books, gardening mags, and also on the Net.  Although you'll get variations on each plant, there's a lot of gardening advice that's general and applies any plant.

For instance, the gardening advice needed for planting is pretty much uniform.  You must place plantings where they'll get room to grow so they don't overcrowd one another.  Good airflow is a plus, and plantings must be in a place where they'll obtain sufficient quantities of sunshine.  Advice will forever assure you to add some sort of nutrients to the soil to induce greater plant development, such as mulch or compost.

Gardening advice on watering crops is a bit more diversified, since each type of plant calls for different measures of water.  E.g., you wouldn't need to water a cactus near as much as you water a tomato plant.  How often you water can obviously also count on where you reside, the climate, and how often it rains in your region.

Gardening advice from virtually every reference will state to you that your plants not only require plant food when you set about planting them, they'll also need to be fed throughout their growth season.  What variety of fertilize applied can depend upon the soil content and pH balance, but plant food will definitely be necessary on most of your plants.  Compost could be applied as an alternative and it's easy to get advice about how to build a compost heap also when fertilizer and compost needs to be applied.

Gardening advice on weeds, insects, disease, and how to do away with them are likely the most sought advice altogether in gardening.  These pests intrude on all gardens and if you do not eliminate them, they'll take over and destroy your garden.  There is a lot of different chemicals and pesticides which could be applied, and gardening advice can normally hint nurserymen in on which chemicals are best, which are bad, and which ones are simpler to use.

New Reduce Stress with Gardening

Many people in our country today are working in high-stress environments that leave them exhausted, irritable and difficult to be around.  Add to that long commutes, and the demands of family including children.  Stress can lead to some serious physical as well as mental problems. It is important, therefore, to reduce stress as much as possible whenever possible.

One way to reduce stress is to engage in an activity that is opposite what you do during the day, on your job.  Over the years I have suggested gardening as a stress reducing tool. Gardening does not have to be strenuous to be effective, and it can be fun.  Besides the benefit of doing something physical, you can produce some beautiful results that will contribute to a beautiful yard or patio.

There is a sense of pride that comes with planting a rose bush, for example, feeding and watering it, and watching it produce beautiful blooms. Or you may want to grow orchids.  For people who have houses, there will be plenty of places to put blooming plants to beautify your yard and perhaps over time to make a place where you can sit quietly and enjoy what you have done. Check with your local nursery to see which plants grow best in your area.

For those who live in apartments, you might consider container gardening.  If you have a small patio or porch, you can put many kinds of plants in pots and watch them flourish. It is amazing how many different flowering plants can be grown in pots.  Miniature roses do well as do bulbs.  Unless you have a large pot, if you want roses it is best to stay with the miniature type.  A warning.  Well cared for and fed miniature roses can become quite large.

Plants inside your home are also a beautiful touch.  They add to any decor, and need little care beyond watering and regular feeding.  Some of my house plants are more than 20 years old, and all I do is water and feed weekly, then trim every so often.  Put a plant on a tall plant stand in a corner where there is plenty of light, but not a lot of direct sun.

Before you start any of this it would be a good idea to go to a local nursery or home improvement store where they sell plants, and just look around.  Think about where you would like to place your plants, how big they will become, and the type care they would need.  A terrific starter plant for inside is Pothos.  It will grow in nothing but water, and if fed weekly produces huge beautiful green leaves. Once rooted in water, you can plant in soil, unless you have already purchased one that is potted.  You can put different varieties in the same pot for an interesting look.

When we work with living plants, nurture and cultivate them, feed and water them, we derive a sense of accomplishment and pride.  You will find yourself de-stressing and enjoying what you have done to beautify your home and garden.

Best of Self Contained Hydroponic Gardening

Hydroponic gardening is the growing of plants without soil, usually indoors. A hydroponic system is a self-contained growing unit that is made up of of some growing containers, growing medium, a water reservoir, a pump that circulates the water, and a grow light. If you are new to hydroponic gardening you might consider buying a complete kit, all you need to add is the water, solution nutrients and the plants.

The idea behind hydroponics kits involves growing plants without soil and nourishing them with a nutrient rich solution. This method of gardening is becoming popular because the gardener maintains control over the nutrients and oxygen the plant receives. Under these controlled conditions, the plants grow faster.

When you use a hydroponics kit system, you can grow more plants in a smaller space because of the superior efficiency of the nutrient solution system. The process allows for easier fertilization since it is possible to use an automatic timer for fertilizing plants.

Hydroponic Gardening System Kits

Hydroponic kits vary widely in size and price, but most systems accommodate a set number of growing pots. This means if you purchased a kit that only features 14 growing stations, you can only grow 14 plants at a time. Unless you have severe space restrictions, buy a hydroponic system that grows at least 24 plants or more.

Grow chambers provide the right atmosphere for plant growth in a hydroponic gardening system. A grow chamber is a self-contained agricultural and horticultural growing unit which incorporates all equipment for growing plants such as lighting, ventilation, liquid set-up, timers, fans and filtration systems.

These grow systems are sold in a variety of hydroponics kits, many of which include a self contained growing reservoir. Each kit includes everything you need to start your homegrown hydroponics garden such as LED grow lights, grow lights, and fertilizer. The only thing you provide is the water.

Now you are ready to pick out the vegetables you want to raise. Lettuce and tomatoes grow especially well in a self contained hydroponic gardening system. Other vegetables that also thrive in this environment are peppers, herbs and cucumbers.

New Toad Houses for Green Gardening

Toad houses for organic gardening is a perfect way to attract hungry toads that feed on thousands of harmful garden pests each day. This solution to green gardening pest control is fun and effective, but there are some specific requirements and responsibilities that need to be followed. If you truly are a green gardener you are already halfway there. The toad is nocturnal and very sensitive. Simply put, he breathes and drinks through his skin. Unique Hydroponic Gardening Systems

When you lack the land for a traditional garden, consider one of the hydroponic gardening systems in order to raise vegetables indoors.

Hydroponic gardening techniques were brought into modern agricultural practice with the invention of nutrient additives and formulas in the early 1900s. Originally hydroponic gardening utilized water as the growing medium. Today hydroponic gardeners use various other forms for growing medium.

There are six basic types of hydroponics growing medium systems in use today: wick, water culture, drip, ebb and flow, nutrient film technique and aeroponic. There are other growing mediums available today but the are variations of these six basic types of hydroponics.

Hydroponic Gardening Systems - Wick Systems

Of the hydroponic gardening systems the most suitable for indoor gardening is the wick system. Most indoor gardeners prefer wick systems as the simplest ways to grow plants. The wick system is passive, so it has no moving parts. Growing plants using the wick method is very simple. A wick is simply placed into a container of nutrient solution. The wick draws the nutrient solution into the growing medium, so there is no need for any additional moving parts.

Other components of the wick hydroponic gardening system usually include:

* Growing medium

* Growing tray

* Hydroponics system air pump

* An air stone

To use the wick hydroponics system, you'll need to include a growing and rooting medium. Perlite, vermiculite and Pro-Mix are commonly used for grow medium with hydroponic gardening systems. The major problem with the wick system is that plants requiring large amounts of water may use up the nutrient solution faster than the wick can supply it.

Ebb and Flow

This hydroponic gardening system is also known as the "flood and drain" method, The ebb and flow indoor system works by temporarily flooding the grow tray with nutrient solution, and then draining the solution out of the tray and back into the nutrient solution holding tank. A submerged pump run by a timer is responsible for continuously cycling the nutrient solution. The timer turns the pump on, and the nutrient solution is pumped into the grow tray. Then, when the timer shuts the pump off, the nutrient solution flows back into the holding tank. This process is carefully timed, and repeated several times throughout the day. The size and type of plants, humidity, temperature and the type of growing medium used can all affect the number of times the hydroponics system will "ebb and flow".

Water Culture System

Another easy hydroponic gardening system that is simple to set up is the water culture system. Components include:

a floating platform

air line,

air stone

air pump

The floating platform acts as a foundation system and holds plants in place while the roots dangle in the nutrient solution. The air pump is located outside of the tank and pumps air through the line to the air stone. The air stone, in turn, aerates or "bubbles" through the nutrient solution, providing oxygen for the plant roots.

An ideal plant to grow using the water culture hydroponics system is leaf lettuce. Leaf lettuce is a plant that grows quickly and requires a lot of water, making it a good match for this type of hydroponics system.

Inspirational Intensive Organic Gardening in Your Home Garden

Intensive gardening is nothing new. It is a method that has been around for centuries and is still practiced in many parts of the world. The close spacing of plants, maintaining a fertile soil, crop rotation and succession planting combined together is what sets this method of gardening in a class of it's own, along with apart from the traditional row method.

Raised beds are the ideal when incorporating these methods of gardening together. The preparation of a raised bed by digging, along with adding organic soil amendments to the existing soil before building your garden beds will greatly improve the soils structure. Double digging, adding amendments and mounding your garden beds above the existing ground will improve the soils aeration, drainage, moisture retention and tilth to allow for deep root penetration. Mounding of the soil also allows for added space to be planted over a flat surface.

A fertile, well balanced, organic rich soil is very important with this method of gardening. The bulk of the organic amendment to the soil being compost. Minerals like greensand and rock phosphates are also very beneficial. Green manure crops planted and turned into the soil will also help provide nutrients needed when planting crops at a close spacing along with improving the soils structure by adding organic matter.

In the traditional row method of gardening only 1/3 of the total gardens space is planted, compared to more than 3/4 when intensive gardening practices are used. Planting at a closer spacing usually is done by staggering the plants, allowing for more plants per square foot. Careful planning is needed to be done with this method, taking into consideration each crops habits, size at maturity, root spread, nutrition intake and water habits.

Succession planting is is very important to get the most out of your growing season. This is simply done by rapidly replanting to fill the spaces of crops that have been harvested. With a little simple planning, this can be achieved by rotating cool and warm climate crops. Once you start your garden in the spring with your cool climate crops and they are harvested, you can replant those areas with crops that will do well in the warmer weather months. After the warm clime crops have been harvested, you can replant with another crop that likes the cooler temperatures and harvest them in the fall. Timing is very important with succession planting to get the most out of your growing season.

Another great benefit to this method of gardening is companion planting. Carefully planning needs to be done when using this method, like nutrients being replenished back into the gardens soil. Different crops call for different nutrient needs. Planting the same crop over and over in the same location will do no benefit to your garden and only deplete the nutrients from the soil. Rotate nitrogen-fixing legumes like peas with crops that need nitrogen, such as corn, lettuce or tomatoes.

Intensive gardening is a method that is highly productive with a little careful planning.

New Easy Square Foot Gardening

Square foot gardening offers an ideal method for new gardeners. It is also perfect for busy people, and those with arthritis or other physical limitations. If you are looking for the easiest way to garden, this method offers real advantages. Square foot gardening can even be done in raised beds, or in containers, to make it easy on your back.

Square foot gardening is simply dividing a well-planned garden into one foot sections. Each of these one foot sections is part of a four foot square block. These garden blocks are designed to be four feet on each side so you can easily reach all of the plants from outside the planting bed. When you step in a garden bed, your weight will compact the soil and make it harder for plant roots to grow. Each individual square foot is then divided so each plant gets just the space it needs.

Gardening in simple squares allows you to plant only what you need instead of having to plant a whole row of one crop. With this method, you can also plant crops in succession so they do not ripen all at once. If you have too many plants it can become overwhelming to care for them.

Square foot gardening works well in raised beds. By raising the beds 12 inches (or more if needed) it also makes it easier to reach them. Wheelchair users or those with severe back problems may choose to have truly raised beds built so they can tend to their garden without having to lean over.

Container gardening can be adapted to the square foot method as well, although you will need to take care to select containers that are deep enough for the roots. When using containers, plan to use rich soil and water often for best results. Container plants are dependent on you for nutrients and can dry out quickly in hot weather.

An example of a four foot block planting for maximum production might be one tomato plant in each of the first two squares, four bush squash plants in the next two squares. The next four squares could hold one eggplant, one cabbage, one pepper plant, and one cauliflower. Broccoli in two squares, 16 onions in one square, 32 carrots in two squares, a dozen loose leaf lettuce in one square, four marigolds in one square, and nine spinach in one square (each square is one foot). As produce is harvested, short season or late season crops such as baby lettuce or cabbage can be planted in the empty spots.

Gardening in squares instead of rows saves space too so you will probably be able to put your garden closer to your house. You will need about twenty percent less space than with traditional garden rows. With your garden just beyond your back door, you will enjoy it more and spend more time tending to our vegetable garden. A closer garden is also easier for harvesting since you can pick vegetables as they ripen and use them right away.

You'll find that square foot gardening is much easier for both new gardeners and experienced gardeners. Not only will you plant only what you want and not too much, but you will be planting in rich, loose soil and in raised beds that are easier on your back. No need for exhausting double-digging and pulling out excess seedlings. You can plant closer to the house and you use your space more efficiently. Once you try square foot gardening, you'll love having your own fresh vegetables with much less effort.
